Manufacturer: Scammell China
User: Atlas Candy & Tea Rooms, Duluth, Minn.
Distributor: E. F. Burg, Duluth, Minn.
Date of examples: circa 1924 – 1954
Notes: The Atlas Tea Room, at 124 W 1st Street, opened Dec. 20, 1922, in the newly completed Garrick Building. It offered a full line of homemade candy, pastry, ice cream, and lunches and advertised on matchbooks: "We'll serve you a meal or a sandwich" with "Coffee as you like it."
Per the business card shown above: "The finest and most up to date Tea Room in the Northwest. We serve the best home-cooked food in the city of Duluth. The best in pastries and courteous service. It's a pleasure for us to serve you, and you will find there is no better place to eat. Our Fountain is a place where you can enjoy a real drink or the best in Ice Cream. Come in and try one of our Specials. Our candies are made by us daily and are the best quality that can be made anywhere. A box of our Chocolates or other candy will be a treat to any lover of pure candies."
The topmark on the china implies that there were multiple tea rooms, but it is not known if that goal was met and if others were opened. Also, there was an Atlas Candy Co. that seemed to have shops across the country in the Twenties, but it is not known if there was any connection between them and the Duluth location.
It is not known when the tea room closed, but there was a story in the March 5, 1944, issue of the Escanaba Daily Press about a bridal reception held there a few days prior.
Scammell made the Trenton China service crested with "Atlas CANDY & TEA ROOMS" within a blue circle framed in tan. Flowers and ribbon scrolls complete the design. A blue line flanks the crest, mid-rim.
