Notes: The Balsams, located in Dixville Notch, New Hampshire encompasses 15,000 acres in the White Mountains. This resort was built in 1866 and initially was called the Dix House. It was purchased 30 years later by Henry Hale, who renamed it The Balsams and added to the grand resort.
"The owner of the New Hampshire hotel where the first-in-the-nation presidential primary ballots are cast is making an announcement about its pending sale. The 150-year-old-plus Balsams Grand Resort in Dixville Notch (NH) was put up for sale in July. The Tillotson family has owned the northern New Hampshire resort since 1954. Today it is at least 5,000 acres, with four private lakes, a golf course and ski area. The Balsams recently underwent extensive renovations, including its Ballot Room, where the presidential primary ballots are cast at the stroke of midnight every four years."
On March 10, 2011, the resort was was purchased by Ocean Properties, which purchased Wentworth By The Sea in 2003. Click here for the resort website.
