Manufacturer: Maddock Pottery
Name of user: Cafe Madrid
Distributor: L. Barth & Son
Date of cup and saucer: circa 1905 – 1912
Notes: On May 1, 1905, James Churchill started the Cafe Madrid on Broadway at 46th Street in New York City, and based on old newspaper stories of its era, apparently during its short time in existence, the restaurant was known both as Churchill's and Café Madrid.
In August 1909, it was sold to the George Rector Company. In June 1911, the company name was changed to the Madrid Company. Rector withdrew and Samuel Mayers became president and treasurer. In February 1912, the Cafe Madrid filed for bankruptcy.
On April 12, 1912, the three-story Cafe Madrid building at 1551 Broadway was auctioned off. Included in this auction was the Cafe Madrid name, furnishings, crockery and glassware. There is no more mention of the Cafe Madrid in newspapers after the sale.
A Childs restaurant later occupied the building.
Maddock made Lamberton China crested "Cafe Madrid" in coin gold script lettering outlined in black. Black and gold pin lines flank the logo, mid-rim.
