Notes: The Captain's Table Restaurant opened in October 1960, on Route 322 east of Clearfield, Pennsylvania. It was designed and owned by Dennis Boal and his wife. An article in The Progress newspaper (page 1; page 14) in Clearfield dated Sept. 30, 1960, states: "[The] exterior is a combination of modern and traditional with picture windows around three sides. White glazed brick blends with colonial entrances to add to the effect of light and simplicity.
"Inside the decorating motif is in shades of beige, white, yellow, soft brown and tangerine, some in muted tones, accented by brighter ones.
"A functional fireplace and mirror wall occupies the unwindowed side of the building. Draperies in alternating folds of white, beige and tangerine can be drawn to curtain the windows or left open to provide a view while one dines.
"The name of the restaurant was selected by Mrs. Boal who explained that one time when she was making a boat trip she was impressed by the captain's table – the one for the special and honored guests. 'When I saw the captain's chairs I knew they were what I wanted, and I decided that every table would be a captain's table and everyone a special guest,' she said.
"We are planning a menu to accommodate people in any income bracket, and our prices will be competitive to restaurants serving the tourist trade on main route highways, and at the same time will [be] a meal to please the person who enjoys the best in expensive meats and seafoods.
"In the front area of the restaurant we have a lunch area with a seating capacity of 85 people. In a separate dining room, there is seating capacity for 100 people. By use of folding doors, these rooms can be closed off into separate rooms.
"The restaurant is equipped with controlled air conditioning, electric heat, tiled restrooms, public telephone, background music, and rapid exhaust of smoke. Surrounding the building is ample parking area."
Another article in The Progress dated July 11, 1972, announced the opening of the Captain's Table Motel (shown above) adjacent to the restaurant. It was owned and designed by Dennis Boal, assumed to be the Boals' son, and contained 28 rooms. The article states that Dennis Boal also managed the Captain's Table Restaurant.
When the restaurant closed is not known, but we could not find any newspaper articles after October 1976.
White body plate with a tangerine (in reality a muted rusty/coral shade) airbrushed band around the outer rim except at the top. At the top of the well, under the break in the rim's band is a drawing of the bust of a sea captain in brown. Under the drawing are the words "the Captain's Table" in a brown script font.
