Manufacturer: Syracuse China
User: Chieftain Hotel
Date of plate: 1926
Notes: The Chieftain Hotel was located in Council Bluffs, IA. Construction started on the 8-story, 300-room hotel in 1925 and opened its doors in the Fall of 1926. In 1927, Grant Wood (artist most famous for "American Gothic") was commissioned by Eppley Hotels to create murals in the Corn Room and Pioneer Room. In 1970, the hotel was converted to apartments and the above mentioned murals were given to anyone who would take them down. The Arts Council of Council Bluffs is now undertaking a project to find as many parts of the mural as possible and conserve them for their museum.
Service plate, from the original order of china, features a Native American chief in full headdress with Chieftain below picked out in beadwork with a beaded fringe. Black, coin gold and rust rim lines.
