Manufacturer: Buffalo China and Syracuse China
User: Chesapeake & Ohio Railway ~ C&O Railway
Pattern: Charlottesville
Date of Buffalo ice cream shell: 1915 – 1940s; date of Syracuse ice cream shell: 1944
Notes: This pattern, when topmarked C&O, is called Charlottesville, regardless of the manufacturer. It was a stock pattern customized with the topmark and the Charlottesville name was probably given by a railroad researcher. According to Luckin's "Dining on Rails," the pattern saw service on the Hocking Valley Railway train The Buckeye, between Columbus and Toledo.
McNicol, Syracuse and Buffalo China all made this for the Chesapeake & Ohio railroad and all pieces used for the railroad are topmarked "C&O" (not backstamped RR). The same pattern can be found in other colors and used by various hotels.
White body with swags of bell flowers, wreaths of brownish-orange, black bows, and a black rim line with C&O above a swag.
