Notes: Located at 195 Maine Mall Road, So. Portland, Maine, the Cock & Bull Restaurant was a popular venue in the 1970s. The back of the postcard (circa 1970s) shown below, describes the restaurant as "an attractive new building, representative of an Old English, half-timbered style tavern, situated off Exit 7 of the Maine Turnpike. The Cock and Bull serves lunch and dinner – Fish-Steak-Chops." The building later became the Ground Round and then an IHOP Restaurant.
A "cock & bull story" is a "fanciful and unbelievable tale." The origin of this phrase can be traced back to England and the first English citation is from Robert Burton's "The Anatomy of Melancholy, 1621: Some men's whole delight is to talk of a Cock and Bull over a pot."
