Manufacturer: Jackson China
User: Creighton's International Restaurant – Riviera Beach, Florida
Date of examples: circa 1950s– 1965
Notes: From Steven Koska: "Charles W. Creighton opened Creighton's Cafeteria in Ashville, N.C., in 1930 downstairs in the old Bon Marche building on Haywood Street. It was one of his first restaurant ventures. He later started famous restaurants in Florida including Creighton's in Fort Lauderdale, Johnston's Coffee Shop in Daytona and the Wedgwood Inn in St Petersburg. In 1937, he purchased Johnston's Coffee Shop and set out to make the best apple pie. A few years later in 1942 he was summoned from the kitchen to meet a customer who wanted to compliment him on his apple pie. That was how he first met Duncan Hines.
"Since that meeting all Creighton restaurants carried the Duncan Hines recommendation. In the 1960s Creighton was contracted by the Navy to advise on improving the food of navy ships, however he did not divulge his secret recipe for his famous apple pie. Charles Creighton told the story of meeting King Saud of Saudi Arabia. The King stopped into Creighton's restaurant with a party of 22 people. Ever the generous host Creighton gave the King an apple pie. The King thanked him with a gold wristwatch and gold ceremonial dagger."
In addition to the three restaurants mentioned above, Charles Creighton also opened two other Florida locations, Crieghton's International Restaurant in Riviera Beach (this entry) and Wedgwood Inn's El Rancho Motor Lodge in Saint Petersburg. Creighton also ventured into Georgia with Mammy's Shanty and Pickaninny Coffee Shop next door in Atlanta.
A post card ad for Creighton's International Restaurant reads as follows: "Creighton's International Restaurant, Bazaar International two blocks north on Route 1 from the West Palm Beach Town Line. White body bowl with a chartreuse line around the inner rim and turquoise Chinese ribbons with triangular pointed ends around the middle of the rim. On the right side of the bowl's well are drawings of four Chinese Pagodas, two a light turquoise and two a light chartreuse. The cup and saucer are similar in design except the well of the saucer only has a single Pagoda drawing in chartreuse and the top inner rim of the cup has a snippet of the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne in turquoise block letters: "We'll Take A Cup O' Kindness Yet For Days O' Auld Lang Syne."
This phrase from the song was also used in cups with Jackson China's La Belle pattern – no relation to this venue.
