Manufacturer: Scammell China
Name of user: Englewood Cliffs Milk Farm
Date of backstamp: circa 1931
Notes: "A hop, skip and a jump from exhaustion to exhilaration" was the slogan used by Englewood Cliffs Milk Farm, a luxurious spa for its time that was in business at least until the late 1970s. It was located in Englewood Cliffs, N.J., just 10 minutes from New York City where women could practice the three R's: reduce, rest, and relax. It offered unstructured, informal activities and a sauna, steam room, massage tables, and exercise solarium.
The dining room offered nutritionally sound meals that were limited to 700 and 1,000 calories daily. The main house and annex accommodated 70 guests.
Scammell produced the Ivory body Lamberton China crested "Englewood Cliffs Milk Farm" in green script lettering. The green leaf and berry transfer border is around the rim.
The backstamp could have been made circa 1931, but first ads for the spa didn't begin appearing until 1942 so it's not known if the spa was in business that early or if the range for the backstamp extended that far.
