Manufacturer: Maddock Pottery
User: Gargoyle Restaurant
Distributor: Albert Pick & Co.
Date of plate: Circa 1906 – 1919
Notes: The Gargoyle Restaurant at 304-06 Grand Avenue in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was built in 1906 by Gustave Pabst as an outlet for his Pabst Beer. The two-story dining room had tables on the main floor and on a balcony.
Prohibition, which ended the sale of beer, caused the Gargoyle to close in 1921. The building was then converted into the Rialto Theater.
Maddock Pottery produced the service – or dinner – plate. The center-of-the-well Gothic crest is a black scalloped frame around a vertical oval. The oval contains a gargoyle with hands on cheeks and protruding tongue, against a red background. There are coin gold and red lines at the rim and verge. This Lamberton china was supplied by Albert Pick & Co.
