Date of example: circa 1935-54
Notes: Gies' Cafe & Restaurant, located at 127-129 S. 3rd Street in Easton, Penn., was founded in 1899. By the 1950s it had a dining room that seated 225 guests. They advertised "Seafood Our Specialty."
According to his obituary, Gies Cafe was owned by George H. Gies from 1900 until his death in 1938.
John Gies (son of George) and his wife Theresa Gies – as well as John's mother Florence – operated the restaurant after George's death, and in the 1950s Florence turned over the business to her son. In 1968, Gies' closed when the building was razed during an urban redevelopment project.
Scammell produced the Lenape base china crested: Gies'. The border is composed of nine, and seven, stepped vertical bar transfer ornaments, connected by a line at the verge. A wider line is at the edge of the rim. Some pieces, such as the creamer shown above that does not have the Gies' name as a topmark, are backstamped with Penn Hotel Supply and Gies' Cafe.
