Manufacturer: Maddock Pottery
User: Hallberg's, Seattle, Washington
Distributor: Frederick & Nelson
Date of platter: circa 1910 – 1915
Notes: Swedish born Peter A. Hallberg arrived in Seattle as a sailor in 1888. He gave up the seafaring life for a job in the Union Bakery at 119 Pike Street, and by 1899, he was the operator of the Union Bakery. In 1908, with a new location at 217 Pike Street, he advertised as "Union Bakery and Restaurant."
In 1915, a second location opened at 511 Pine Street, operated as Hallberg's, Inc. A 1922 advertisement features the "Hallberg's" name in script lettering with two swash returns.
Hallberg died in 1922, but the restaurant on Pine Street was still in operation until 1960.
Maddock produced china crested with the double swash logo in red. The Art Nouveau-style scroll ornaments placed around the rim are connected with a line at the verge. The one known example has an impressed Maddock's American China backstamp. It was supplied by Frederick & Nelson, which was located just across the street from the bakery.
