Manufacturer: Scammell China
User: The Harvard Club
Date of oversized cup and saucer: 1928 – 1930
Notes: The Harvard Club of New York City is located at 27 West 44th Street in New York. It was incorporated in 1865. The saucer is 7 1/4" in diameter, the cup is 4 1/2" in diameter. This is certainly one of the largest cup and saucers that has been seen from this period.
The description on a contemporary (2006) cup and saucer with a smiliar size and the same seal, sold on behalf of the Harvard Club of New York City, says: "Roosevelt Coffee Cup – Extra large ceramic cup and saucer with Club Seal. Inspired by Club member Teddy Roosevelt." This might explain the origins of the early oversized set.
