Manufacturer: Maddock Pottery
User: Iffland's, Newark, N.J.
Distributor: L. Barth & Son
Date of compote: Circa 1909 – 1919
Notes: An article in the June 2, 1909, Newark Star reveals that Iffland's, a Newark favorite for 37 years – and located at 187 Market Street – was about to close and be torn down. This wood-framed structure was built by John Iffland in 1872, and it was the last wooden structure remaining on that part of Market Street.
But this is not the end of the Iffland restaurant story, because a new $50,000 brick-and-limestone Iffland's was about to be erected on the same site. Sons John B. and Henry J. Iffland were now in charge of the planning and operation of Iffland's. The ground floor of the new restaurant was to be devoted to dispensing liquid refreshments, while the second floor was to be devoted to solid refreshments, according to this article. The contract for construction by William H. Connolly was filed June 23, 1909. By July 1909, the cafe and restaurant were under construction.
Large ads in the Star-Ledger ran in December touting the reopening of Iffland's German Restaurant on Dec. 27. In February 1910, a dinner for Princeton grads was held there, and an April 1911 article mentions 150 guests at a dinner held at Iffland's.
John Iffland (Joannes John Baptist Iffland) was born in Nassau, Germany, in 1838, and died August 1, 1917. His 39-year old son, John Baptiste Iffland, died July 10, 1919, and the restaurant closed shortly thereafter.
Maddock Pottery, of Trenton, produced the crested china used by Iffland's. The Iffland's crest is composed of outlined and shaded letters. There is a black rim line with orange pin line. The china was supplied by L. Barth & Son.
