Manufacturer: Carr China Company
User: Karzi's Restaurant – Hazelwood, Pennsylvania
Date of eggcup – 1935
Notes: This has been in our mystery list for many years, and this ID is the best we can come up with based on very little information. Newspaper reports (shown above) show there was a fire at a restaurant in Hazelwood, Pennsylvania, which is a Pittsburgh neighborhood, in 1920, indicating the owners of the restaurant were Louis and Frederick Karzis (no apostrophe). And an obituary for Frank Karzis of Hazelwood in 1933 indicated he had been in the restaurant business there for many years.
In the absence of any other references to a Karzi's or Karzis online, it makes sense that this china was used at what was probably called Karzis Restaurant in the Hazelwood neighborhood of Pittsburgh and that it was a family business owned by the Karzis brothers.
It isn't uncommon to see topmarked restaurant ware with either missing or inappropriate apostrophes such as this.
Also, based on other Karzi's topmarked pieces seen by Carr, this smudged backstamp was D-35.
