Manufacturer: Syracuse China
Pattern name: Marathon
Date of open sugar: 1936
Notes: This pattern is found in a binder of Syracuse patterns (shown above) with the notation that it is named Marathon U.G. (for underglaze), with the assigned pattern number of 59108. Below it, and not completely shown on this copy, are numbers that indicate that with different color combinations the pattern numbers might be referred to as 59108, 59109 or ???.
The design seems to be a mash up of Art Deco and Art Nouveau, with the circular ornaments spaced around the edge and with the stylized three square flowers that are reminiscent of the work of Scottish designer Charles Rennie Mackintosh.
