Manufacturer: Maddock Pottery
Distributor: Prael Hegele & Co.
User: Moore's Restaurant, Portland, Oregon
Date: 1907 – 1920
Notes: Around 1905, Ben H. Moore arrived in Portland, Oregon. On July 1, 1907, he opened Moore's Restaurant at 148 Fifth Street, opposite Meir & Frank department store. The restaurant was located in the 50-foot by 100-foot, three-story brick Atchison building. Moore's advertised 50¢ chicken dinners and a private dining room for parties. In 1913, a Christmas dinner was available for 75¢.
In January 1916, Moore leased the saloon that adjoined his restaurant and converted the entire space into a cafeteria. A.O. Hall joined him in operating the new cafeteria.
In October 1920, Moore advertised the sale of the entire cafeteria equipment, including dishes. Prior to that, in August Moore had purchased a hotel in Roseburg, Oregon.
Maddock Pottery produced Lamberton China crested with "Moore's Restaurant" in a blue transfer, with flanking blue pin lines. Prael Hegele & Co., of Portland, was the distributor. This china may have been used in the cafeteria as well because there was a very small time frame to convert from a restaurant to a cafeteria.
