Manufacturer: Scammell China
User: Port Arthur Restaurant
Pattern name: #7010 Ornaments
Supplier: Tilden-Thurber Corp.
Date of butter pat: 1925
Notes: Port Arthur, located at 123 Weybosset Street in Providence, R.I., operated as a Chinese-American restaurant on the building's second floor. It featured a dance floor and a band and was still operating in the 1940s, and possibly beyond. A matchbook described this venue as "The Chinese-American Restaurant of Distinction" and advertised its "Cocktail Nook and Bar."
Though this butter pat is unmarked, Port Arthur was included in Scammell's New England contact book as a customer: Trenton China underglaze, "Port Arthur" on rim, Jefferson Green; #7010 ornaments with green connecting pin line; one line band edge of rim, Jefferson Green. Supplier: Tilden-Thurber Corp. In addition, the flat bottom on butter chips is a Maddock/Scammell design feature.
