User: Preketes Bros., Ann Arbor, Michigan
Date of example : circa 1941 – 1954
Notes: Paul N. Preketes arrived in Ann Arbor from his native Greece in 1904. His brother Charles joined him, and together they opened the Sugar Bowl candy store, at 111 S. Main St., in 1910. Two more Preketes siblings, younger brothers Frank and Tony, soon joined them.
By 1928, the Sugar Bowl had added restaurant service. In 1941, a fire did $50,000 in damage, and by Dec. 13, 1941, the newly renovated and remodeled Sugar Bowl reopened for business. The interior was modern in appearance, with seating capacity for about 200. There were two dining rooms and two kitchens. The Grill Room kitchen was on view behind glass walls.
Charles Preketes died in February 1965. The restaurant closed in 1966, and Paul Preketes died in April 1975.
Scammell produced this Platinum Blue china crested "Preketes Bros. Ann Arbor, Mich." in red.
