Notes: The earliest known advertisement for Rushin's appears in the Aug. 3, 1935, issue of the Wilkes-Barre Times Leader. In a Sept. 7, article the next month, proprietor Andrew Rushin announced renovations being made to "Rushin's Summer Garden" that during the winter would be known as "Rushin's Forest Hills Inn." An ad a few days later, on Sept. 11, 1935, promoted a duck supper for 20¢. Another ad stated, "Completely Remodeled." An article on the same page mentioned that it was one of the most popular dining and dancing centers, which suggested that it had been operating for at least several years by that time.
A Dec. 30, 1936, article described Rushin's new Forest Hills ballroom. It had a seating capacity of 300, with a large dance floor, and additional tables were on the balcony. There were large and small private dining rooms.
In November 1937, Lou Wilski, a well-known sportsman and player in the New York-Pennsylvania Baseball League, became the new proprietor of the Forest Hills Inn. Apparently Wilski did not change the inn's name, because as recently as 1971 it was still operating as Rushin's Mountain Inn.
Scammell made the Lenape tan-bodied china crested "Rushin's" in script letters above "Forest Hills" in a sans serif font. (Weirdly, Forest Hills is actually spelled on the china as "Hill's.") There is a deep green transfer pinecone and needle border in the same color as the logo. The Lenape china base was introduced around 1935, so this china was probably originally ordered when the ballroom was added. The pinecone and needle border was also ordered by other customers, including Hayes-Bickford's.
