Notes: The San Remo restaurant was originally located in Highland, Indiana, at 3904 Ridge Road. It was opened in 1956 by business partners Lenoard Blair and Al Sweet. Near the end of 1962, they moved the restaurant to the neighboring town of Griffith, Indiana, still on Ridge Road but with a 112 East Ridge Road address. At that time, their advertisements in local papers said: "2 stop lights east of our old location."
Within a few months of the move, Blair died in March 1963. Sweet kept the restaurant going for another 19 years but closed it on Jan. 2, 1982. An article in The Times of Hammond, Indiana, dated Jan. 3, 1982, states: "San Remo's, a family restaurant on Ridge Road at Broad Street, served its final meal Saturday night. [Al] Sweet, who with his late partner, Leonard Blair, opened the restaurant 26 years ago, sold San Remo's last month.
"The establishment, known for its Italian cuisine that featured homemade spaghetti sauce and chicken cooked to tender perfection, will be taken over by an Ohio-based franchise of family-style restaurants.
"'It's a sad situation, but something that I knew had to come sometime,' he sighed. 'I'm 68 years old and have no one to turn this over to. We're kind of like an old shoe that's worn.'"
