Manufacturer: Scammell China
User: Schenley Hotel – Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Pattern Name: "Tulip Time"
Date of plate: circa 1929 – 1954
Notes: The Schenley Hotel, on Bigelow Blvd. in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, opened in 1898. A dining room wing was added in 1913, and a 12-story apartment addition began construction in 1922. In 1952, the five-building Schenley complex was sold to the University of Pittsburgh and converted into student housing and a student union.
The Schenley had a main dining room, a coffee shop and a ballroom. It also had a terrace overlooking the hotel garden that was used in warm weather as a dining venue.
Scammell made an Ivory base china service that features a colorful decal border of tulips in full bloom. A dark green verge line is part of the border decal. The coin gold rim line is hand applied. The back stamp explains the border decoration.
