Manufacturer: Syracuse China
Pattern Name: Squares – Underglaze #57901
Pattern Name: Squares – Overglaze #57908
Date of cup and saucer: 1909
Notes: As shown above from two binders of Syracuse patterns, this pattern is characterized by twin pin lines interjected with adjoining crosses with square open centers. Syracuse China offered this pattern in both an underglazed version, #57901, which was most likely used on heavier commercial china, and an overglazed version, #57908, which would have been used more often on lighter weight, home-use china. However, it was always up to the customer to choose which version they wanted.
The example shown in this entry is an overglaze version used on thinner ware for Turtle Brand Coffee and was most likely used as a giveaway at a 1909 Boston Food Fair. We do not at this time (2023) have an example of #57901.
