Manufacturer: Carr China Company
User: Standard Catering Co.
Pattern: Carr's Underglaze Print Pattern #6003
Date of examples: circa 1920s – 1930s
Notes: The hard-to-see backstamp on the mug is Ford Hotel Supply, located in St. Louis, Mo., between 1912 and 1949. That makes us believe that Standard Catering was likely located in St. Louis, and according to the Standard Corporation Service General Index of 1915, a General Catering Co. was registered in New York City at that time.
Volume 36 of the American Contractor, located in Chicago and New York and dated April 3, 1915, gave this information under the heading ST. LOUIS, MO. (seemingly open for contractors to bid): "Mercantile Bldg. (alt. to restaurant): 1 sty. $6M. 207 N. Sixth st. Archt. T. C. Lee, Syndicate Trust bldg. Owner Standard Catering Co., on premises. Archt. taking bids. Press brk., marble & tiling."
Another possibility that now seems unlikely is that there was a Standard Catering Co. in Pittsburgh, Penn., relatively close to the Carr plant, and based on this listing on bizapedia.com had a "filing date" of April 7, 1943. No date is known for the backstamp, but it was used as late as the 1930s.
A Standard Catering Co. business in California began too late to have been manufactured by Carr.
The border pattern is Carr's Underglaze Print Pattern #6003, with no pattern name known.
