Notes: Edwin Payson Swetland was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1842. He learned the candy business from his father.
In 1885, Edwin, his wife, Laura, and son Louis, moved to Portland. In 1886, he opened a confectionery store on Morrison Street. In 1909, Swetland & Son (Louis) moved to larger quarters at 269-271 Morrison Street. The new sweet shop had a soda fountain and a retail candy counter at the front with the dining area was in the back.
On January 17, 1912, son Louis E. Swetland died at age 44. A couple of weeks later, on February 5, 1912, Edwin P. Swetland died at age 70. He was survived by Laura and son Lot Q. Swetland.
By 1923, Swetland's restaurant had relocated to the Royal building at 344 Morrison Street. By December 1924, Swetland's had closed.
Maddock produced two known patterns for Swetland's. The first one is decorated with a green overglaze pattern shown in the Maddock pattern book as #2140 Green Auditorium. It is crested with "Swetland's" in green script across a laurel wreath containing an "S." Crescent dishes contain a Mercer China Co. shield logo backstamp. This service was supplied by Prael Hegele & Co.
The other known pattern is crested with a slightly different version of the "Swetland's" script lettering. The decal border is shown in the Maddock pattern book as #7045 Sheldon Border. This service was also supplied by Prael Hegele & Co.
