Manufacturer: Syracuse China
Pattern name: Overglaze Pattern Series #58204 – #58209
Date of cup: 1937
Use of pattern: pre-1920
This pattern is one of a number of designs with similar lines and grouping of three ornaments found in a binder of Syracuse overglazed patterns. This one, however, is described as "Dk Blue and gold – gold edge line" that accurately depicts the design found on the china shown above that also has the Hotel Del Monte crest in metallic gold. It is not known if this design was custom for the Del Monte or if it might have been used by other customers as well.
Bill Calnan, archivist for Syracuse China, has said that it was always up to customers to choose between overglazed and underglazed patterns, but in general overglazed designs, having been placed literally on top of the protective glaze and fired frequently at lower temperatures to protect any metallic gold, are found more often on what we think of as lighter weight, home-use china. It is not surprising then that so far we haven't been able to document any of the other colors in this series.
