Manufacturer: Jackson China
Pattern/shape: Three Gulp
Date of beer mug: 1930-46
Notes: Shown in James Strano's Jackson China book in a 1914-30-era catalog, this tri-bulbous-shaped mug is listed under Beer Mugs (shown above), as 203 B-399 15 oz Three Gulp, Ang. Hld.
Under the book's heading of mugs, the Three Gulp is also shown with a topmark for Block Hotel.
This mug has an underglaze decal similar to what is commonly known as the Mexican man design with a man in sombrero napping – taking a siesta – surrounded by cactus and clay pots. Handwritten but also fired underglaze is the name Scartino. No information is currently known about the pattern or the name.
The mug itself is tan-bodied with Jackson's JAC-TAN backstamp. Strano notes with the backstamp information that "red iron oxide was added to the clay" to create the tan color.
