Notes: The US Coast Guard, one of the oldest organizations of the federal government, started in 1790 when the first Congress authorized the construction of vessels to enforce tariff and trade laws and to prevent smuggling. Originally known as the Revenue Marine, it received its present name in 1915 when it merged with the Life-Saving Service.
