Notes: Founded December 27, 1862, the league's original purpose was to support the ideals of Abraham Lincoln and unite the city in patriotism. In its first two years, the leagues' Military Recruitment Committee raised 15 Infantry, Cavalry and Artillery regiments. Its Board of Publications printed more than 2 million pamphlets for the Union cause; and its influential members convinced Secretary of War Edwin M. Stanton to create the first United States Colored Troops. Motto: Love of Country Leads.
