Notes: The Hotel Virginia was built in 1847 on the corner of South New and Johnson streets in Staunton, Virginia. During the Civil War it served as the headquarters for Gen. Stonewall Jackson. Ironically, it was the Stonewall Jackson Hotel (that opened in 1924), located adjacent and also owned by Alexander T. Moore, that caused the ultimate demise of the Hotel Virginia. Moore planned to raze the Virginia to make way for a grand addition to the Stonewall Jackson, and with that plan in mind closed the historic hotel on Oct. 5, 1930. The Depression and other factors meant that the addition was never built, and now (cue Joni Mitchell) a parking garage sits on the site of Staunton's historic, first luxury hotel.

This 13.5" platter therefore would have been manufactured sometime between Carr's opening in 1916 and 1929. Distributor was Dulin & Martin Co. in Washington, D.C.
