Manufacturer: Scammell China
User: Walker-Gordon
Date of examples: Circa 1933-1952
Notes: The Walker-Gordon process for processing raw milk with Bacillus Acidophilus cultures was developed in England. In 1897, Walker-Gordon Laboratory Co. purchased farmland in Plainsboro, New Jersey because it was close to New York City and Philadelphia. In 1929, the Borden Company took over the farm operation.
In 1930, Borden built a 50-stall circular milking facility that they named the "Rotolactor," and it became a tourist attraction.
Around 1933, the Gate House restaurant, located at the entrance to the dairy operation, opened. The Gate House served complete meals as well as milk-based items. Another Walker-Gordon restaurant was operated by Borden at the 1939-1940 New York World's Fair. The Gate House restaurant closed around 1952. Based on the dates of these pieces, they would have advertised Walker-Gordon at the Gate House venues.
Scammell made the Lenape China crested with the Walker-Gordon shield.
