Manufacturer: Caribe China, possibly additional manufacturer
User: Wheeler's Restaurant, Wheeler's Lunch, Wheeler's Waffles, Wheeler's Drive-In
Date of creamer: unknown; butter pat: 1958
Notes: Per a story in the June 9, 1930, issue of the Indianapolis Star celebrating the restaurant's sixth anniversary, what would become a chain of at least five restaurants opened in 1924. From the story, "One of Wheeler's specialties are Waffles, served at all hours … and Wheeler's Waffles are known through the Middle West! … Wheeler's is a home-owned business, operating its own commissary and buying from INDIANAPOLIS INSTITUTIONS."
A 1946 ad in the Sun-Telegram of Richmond, Indiana, advertises Wheelers Waffles, (conspicuously without the apostrophe), and this is in addition to a matchbook showing locations in Indianapolis, Frankfort, Lafayette, and Lebanon, Indiana.
Based on a multitude of print ads plus postcards and matchbooks, the signage changed over the history of the chain, as did its name in its ads, variously using after Wheeler's: Restaurant, Restaurants, Lunch, Waffles, Drive-In, and Drive-In Lunch.
It is not known when the chain closed.
Unmarked creamer on tan clay body; Caribe butter pat on white clay body with red airbrushed border. Both have the distinctive Wheeler's Waffles logo with its mix of cursive Wheeler's with horizontal line over Whee and Waffles in all italic caps.
