Founded in 1946 by Pan American World Airways, the InterContinental Hotel chain today is owned by the InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) Inc., headquartered in Denham, United Kingdom.
As of January 2010, IHG is the largest hotel company in the world, as measured by number of rooms. With 646,000 total rooms at 4,500 hotels in more than 100 countries, the global company owns the InterContinental, Holiday Inn and Crowne Plaza hotels. In 1946, American airline entrepreneur Juan Trippe purchased his first InterContinental Hotel in Belem, Brazil. In 1981, the InterContinental Hotels Corporation was sold to the Grand Metropolitan Company and sold again in 1988 to the Saison Group. In 1998, UK-based Bass PLC acquired the company.
