Manufacturer: Syracuse China
User: Metropolitan Life Insurance Company (MetLife)
Date of plate: 1965
Notes: Metropolitan Life Insurance Company can be traced to 1863 when a group of New York City businessmen raised $100,000 and started the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company, which insured Civil War sailors and soldiers against disabilities due to wartime wounds and accidents. In 1868, after several reorganizations and five difficult years, the company decided to focus on the life insurance business as Metropolitan Life Insurance Company.
MetLife is the largest life insurer in the United States. It went public in 2000.
This plate would have been used in MetLife's executive dining room in its New York City headquarters. The MetLife Tower at 1 Madison Avenue, pictured above, was the company's world headquarters until 2005. Headquarters now (2008) is in the MetLife Building, originally the Pan Am Building, at 200 Park Avenue.
