Notes: Metropolitan Life Insurance Company was founded in 1863, when a group of New York City businessmen raised $100,000 and started the National Union Life and Limb Insurance Company, which insured Civil War sailors and soldiers against disabilities due to wartime wounds and accidents. In 1868, after several reorganizations and five difficult years, the company decided to focus on the life insurance business.
Intertwined initials of the company in blue and yellow with a floral band in the same colors surrounding it. This pattern is often found without the company backstamp but this one has the full backstamp and was furnished by Maddock & Miller, Inc., New York City.
