Manufacturer: Syracuse China
Pattern: Water Themes – Spanish Galleon
Date of service plates: circa 1926 – 1928
Notes: These service plates are part of the Water Themes series of transfer-printed and hand-painted ware as designed by Harry G. Aitken (1867–1952). Aitken came to work at Syracuse in 1904 as head of the decorating department and retired in 1946. Among so many of his achievements, Aitken streamlined the pattern color system as well as the process of printing engravings. In addition to instituting team methods of greater efficiency, Aitken added to the company's reputation for fine decoration through his talents as a water colorist and a painter in ceramic colors.
There were four designs in the Spanish Galleon group, and there appear to have been variations among them, as shown.
